What is the history and popularity of the app?

SharesPost was founded in 2009 by Greg Brogger. It was intended to create an online marketplace that would link private companies, prospective investors and shareholders. The current SharesPost currently includes a network of more than 70,000 angel and institutional investors.

What are the differences to other apps?

SharesPost offers many services into one convenient website. Users can complete transactions through SharesPost or discover new potential investment opportunities. The site covers a good amount of ground, including both research tools and share buying and selling tools. SharesPost also provides the assistance of a transaction specialist so users are not left on their own. This could make the site a great option for new investors as well as those who are experts.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The SharesPost website utilizes a black, grey and green color scheme that works exceptionally well. While many other similar websites favor comfortable blues, visitors to SharesPost are greeted by a narrow black header, varying shades of grey and hints of bright green in the buttons and links. This creates an eye-catching contrast that gives SharesPost a personality all its own.

How does the registration process work?

A new user can join the SharesPost community by clicking the green “Register with SharesPost” link in the upper, right hand corner of the homepage. Doing so takes the user to the registration form. The form requires a first and last name, email address, password and investor type (either individual or institutional). When selecting investor type, the user will be asked to choose from a number of additional options. Under individual, the user can choose investment banker, broker, Angel investor, employee with stock or employee with stock options. Under institutional, the user can choose Venture Capital, Hedge fund, private equity, mutual fund, secondary fund or private account manager. The user must also check the terms box to confirm their agreement with the privacy policy and terms of use.

What does it cost to use the application?

SharesPost allows users to create an account for free. The user gets access to all the current features and never has to pay a subscription fee or other charge. The site isn’t 100% cost free because SharesPost takes approximately 3% of the total transaction amount or $5,000, whichever is greater. The U.S. bank that SharesPost uses also charges a flat fee of around $1,500 to each buyer and seller for using the service.

Who would you recommend the application to?

SharesPost offers a helpful service for investors. The site provides a good way to research and explore investment opportunities. Of course the fees indicate that the site is intended for higher dollar amount investing, so those on the low end might be a bit put off.
